'There are no true villians in Steven Universe.' I respectfully disagree.
I'm nowhere near the writing genius that is Rebecca Sugar, but I still want to voice why I disagree with her theme.
As a concept, the idea is fine. However, as an actual plot element, I find the idea to be far-fetched and a bit rediculous, from both a story-telling standpoint and a logical standpoint.
(warning: this is going to be a LONG one)
First off, the storytelling standpoint. What's normally the driving force in a story? The conflict. Everything in a story revolves around a conflict. And in many conflicts, there is a villain. A stark opposite to our hero. A character we want to see the hero defeat. That is what keeps us invested.

If there are no true villians in the show (and so many fans are certain that the Diamonds are on the path to redemption), then where's the conflict? The danger? Why should I be intimidated by the Diamonds or their evil deeds when apparently all of that will eventually be erased and they will be redeemed? Why should I care about the epic conclusion when it's already been spoiled for me anyway? The Diamonds will be redeemed. No one is truely evil. Whatever danger they plan on putting our heroes in will not be permenant or even that bad since they still will be redeemed in the end.
It's like if at the beginning of A New Hope, the text crawl ended with, 'Don't worry, Darth Vader will turn good by the third movie.'
Okay, I might have been a little salty there, but let me move on to my second point. And this is where things get complicated.
Download game gta 5 pc ram 2gb. Secondly, the logical standpoint (regarding everything that's happened in the show). Let's look back on our Diamonds.
They founded and built the Gempire, if not the entire race itself. And what do they do with it? They teach them that Gems are the superior race in the universe and all other life should be either ruled over or wiped out. For THOUSANDS of years, they've been conquering planets. How many planets have they taken over? Dozens? Hundreds? Maybe even thousands? And look what they were planning to do to the Earth according to It Could Have Been Great. Earth was nothing special to be hollowed out. How many planets already met that fate? How many species has Homeworld cruelly and mercilessly annihilated in order to further their empire? They view other life-forms with as much importance as we do for bugs. None. Who cares if some pathetic species gets wiped out of existance? More material for the Kindergardens! It's worked out for them so far and I can't see a reason as to why, after thousands of years of living with this ideal, that they would change their mind. Because of the words of a single Earthling and some rebel Gems? Ha! Oh, they will because he has Pink's Gem? Uh, no. Remember, Pink already tried that and they flat out said no. They were so selfish that they wouldn't even be bothered to spare ONE single planet for their own sister. What hope does Steven have?
And while we're on it, let's look at Homeworld. Like I said, they've been space Nazis for thousands of years! And conquests aside, look at their society. It's one completely built and reliant on subjectation. The Diamonds are their goddesses. Each Gem is made for a specific purpose. Any type of free or independent thinking is punished with shattering. That's what they're born to believe and that's how they've been living for thousands of years (since Gems can't die from aging). That's a type of brainwashing we can't even begin to comprehend. And let's not forget about the colonies, where the same morals and lifestyle are probably practiced and enforced. How many Homeworlds are we looking at now?
On top of that, the majority of Homeworld Gems know little to nothing about humans/Earth and those who do see humans as little more than animals. Heck, they view ANY type of life as inferior! They don't believe in peaceful co-existance. They see themselves as the dominant species in the universe! Asking them to suddenly drop it all and embrace the ideals of their mortal enemy will do nothing, but make things 1000x times worse. It's like asking all of America to suddenly embrace communism or the Nazi ideals. There won't be any peace or order, instead total chaos! Riots, uprisings, likely many, MANY mental breakdowns. The entire Gempire itself will probably collapse and take the universe with it!
Yes, the Crystal Gems were once Homeworld Gems, but we don't know how long it took or how hard it was for Rose/Pink to turn her followers to her side. And she at least had the advantage of already being their ruler, so their loyalty may have partially been out of their duty to follow their Diamond's orders. And now..Pink is gone and Steven lacks her authority, her experience, or her steadfast attitude. Plus, he's a human. The symbol of everything Homeworld fought against during the Gem War. Why the heck would they want to follow him? The only Homeworld Gem Steven has really managed to turn was Peridot (Lapis was a POW, so she doesn't count), but that was becuase she was forced to help them deal with the Cluster. She's the exception, not the norm.
Oh, and admitting to the whole race that Rose was Pink..Yeah, total chaos. It's a lit match utop a mountain of gasoline.
As my final note, I'd like to bring up a bit of a personal gripe I have with the show. I personally cannot have faith in their plan to redeem the Diamonds because the show can't do redemption stories properly! What do I mean?
Three words:
Drama.
Without.
Consequences.
Yeah, I've bitched and moaned about this issue a lot, but it still stands true to me. The show has a bad habit of either skipping or outright ignoring crucial elements in a character's redemption.
Let's look at our first contender, Bismuth. I'm happy she's a member of the team again, but her character arc went as smoothly as Steven's first attempt at shapeshifting. Last time we saw her, she was hellbent on shattering, so much so that Rose had to imprison her inside Lion AND she tried to kill Steven after he refused to use the Breaking Point. In Maid of Honor, she’s suddenly over that? She doesn’t attack Steven or still show any anger at him or Rose? She's even ready to abandon her 'Gems must be shattered' mindset in favor of bubbling?!
How?! Why?! Hell, the reveal to her that the Diamonds corrupted all her teammates should have only FURTHERED her “pro-killing” stance and increased her anger at Steven/Rose for not letting her use the Breaking Point during the war.
Bismuth: “We could have stopped this, all of this (motions to the bubbled Gems) if you hadn’t stopped me Rose!”
Our second contender is dear, sweet Lapis Lazuli. She’s got the same problems as Bismuth, only worse. So much emotional fallout of her backstory has just been ignored. We’ve never seen her make peace with the Gems over the mirror or Malachite. We’ve hardly even seen her interact with the Gems (aside from Peridot). She is not their friend, she only tolerates them for Steven’s sake. Now she’s suddenly declaring herself a full-blown Crystal Gem?!
Yeah, for a show based on drama, the writers sure like to take liberties with what they actually show us! Why are they so afraid of showing characters own up to their actions?

And this tactic CANNOT work on a Diamond redemption story becuase the Diamonds have the most drama out of any character. Not only does Steven have to deal with being mistaken for Pink, but (I desperately hope) he will also have to deal with their post-reunion rage and angst. Just to recap, their OWN SISTER lied to them, betrayed them, halted their empire’s expansion, started a war over the lives of creatures they see as important as insects, made them think she was killed, AND left them in mourning for 5,000 years! They shouldn’t be hugging her and wanting to work with her, they should be furious. I know I would be. Hell, I wouldn't be the least bit suprised if the Diamonds decided to disown Pink for doing so much to them. There is no way in Steven's lifetime that all this bigotry, angst, hate, and rage will be forgiven and Homeworld and Earth will become friendly.
Phew! Christ, this has got to be one of my longest and deepest posts ever. It sure took a lot out of me. If only I'd put as much effort into my schoolwork.
